Here’s my notes on how to get the looks for Addie.

1. The basic concept is to make a material for each mesh that has hard shadows and for the light and shadows make two separate UVs that combines into the one final material.

2.You first make a UV texture for the mesh youre texturing. For Blender I use smart UV project because Im lazy and I hate UV mapping by hand. I also use texture painting for a lot of the painting and details There are resources on how to do this for Maya and Blender. Look them up.

4. Make two materials. In Maya this is a matter of making one material and for the black and white replacing them with a UV map and an identical UV map that is darker that you color edited in Photoshop.
For Blender you make two materials like this…

MESH_material is the one you adjust to make hard shadows while for MESH_color you adjust to take on the UV texture and shadeless texture.
For MESH_material this is how you set it up to get that toon shading.

For MESH_color this is how you set it up. It can be any color since the Shadeless option is the only important thing. And for MESH_color you go in the TEXTURES property and attach the UV texture to it.

5. Finally you activate nodes for MESH_material and you set it up as so. MESH_material connects to Fac, and MESH_color connects to Color 1 and 2. The upside to using a duplicate of MESH_color for Color 2 is that if you attach a hue/saturation node to it you can adjust the color for it on the spot without messing with the UV texture! The outlines were made in Blender with Freestyle line sets. There are resources for these too.

The basic concept translates into both Maya and Blender. Its just a matter of figuring out how to work it out. Good luck!
Twitter dump. Ive been hanging out on Twitter because Im mad at Tumblr for being a total wimp on net neutrality.

Uh, no, sorry, I am certainly not going to tell a working artist “it’s about the principle, not the paycheck.” Landing jobs in animation is not easy–it’s an extremely competitive industry and um … people?? need money?? to live??
Look, it’s not a great thing that the show had been promoted as “based on the life of Chris Savino,” but it is not, to my knowledge, the official tag line of the show or anything, and nothing in the content of the show itself reflects any of the awful things Savino did. I have my own opinions about choosing to greenlight a show by a guy whose reputation probably preceded him, but that isn’t the fault of the artists working under him. Animation artists aren’t like A-list actors. We don’t have the luxury of making big statements by refusing to be cast on this or that movie because of Principles. People gotta work.
Also I can’t believe I have to say this, but do not compare the Loud House to the Holocaust!
I feel like people dont understand the WHOLE POINT of reporting Savino with swift and justified consequences was to PROTECT the crew and ALL future crew members. Go tell a crew member being sexually harassed that if they reveal their incidents to anyone they will have to deal with the possibility of 100 employees being fired leaving 100 homes with no guarantee of food on the table. Thats messed up. Clarence could be argued to be initially about Skylar Page’s childhood too. But after the crew came onto the show, shows like Loud House and Clarence become the work of a lot of people’s input and unified direction. If you push for Loud House to be cancelled that is punishing the brave women who came forward with their stories to protect their friends and incoming generation of crew members. Loud House can be changed into something good and pure joy for a lot of kids why do you want to go scorched earth on something we can build into something good?
